Dear Adults:
Please stop blaming everything that you dislike on PI on children.

Some children are whiny. Ignore them. I'm sure there are people on here that you possibly thought were adults until you read that they were under 10. Some children are very smart and mature. Most children on this site are respectful.

Begging? Why, I'm positive that plenty of adults and teens on PI beg. So why bother blaming it all on kids? Begging is rude for kids to do? It's rude for everyone, not just children.

It may be likely things you dislike are from children. Then again, it may be likely that you just think they're children from the way they're acting. I, sadly, have seen some people on here that are over 40 years old and I believed that they were 10 at first. Why would you automatically assume that it was a child's fault?

Now, I'm not saying all kids are angels. But please, at least respect the fact that it's very easy to disguise your age on websites. I believe it's quite rude to assume that all children ever do is wrong.

Yours Truly,

Saying "Most beggars are children" is not the same as saying "Most children beg". I think people are more likely to assume someone being immature is young, rather than assume that because someone's young they must be immature.

I really don't think anyone on here is saying everything kids do is wrong, or that all the problems on the site are perpetuated by children. I've been around PI for awhile and a lot of the people who have been complained about the most are actually adults, or at least in the 16+ bracket.

I never assume anyone is a child online. I almost always figure I'm talking to an adult. Unless they don't use any punctuation or awkward word choice. But then I also ponder first if perhaps English simply isn't their first language or if they simply don't care about grammar. I'm generally surprised when I find out someone is young, even when I'm on a "kiddy" website.

Not to mention, I play D&D Encounters with an eight year old (I think he's eight) who does some amazingly good tactical stuff half the time. I know kids can be capable of some reasonably mature stuff (of course, in his case, it helps that his dad is also a very good tactician but the kid generally makes his own choices every turn while now and then we offer some advice. It isn't a case of the father running two characters while the kid becomes distracted.)

To be honest, if you are one of the kids that are not whiny and beg a lot then you have nothing to worry about.

The fact that begging, bad spelling and whining are associated with children IMO is because it is childlike. People will say, "stop acting like a child" to eachother, but it's nothing to be taken personally.

Personally, I didn't think you were a young user, because on the forums I have seen you to be polite, respectful and considerate to other USRs. Not for a moment would I blame you for the way another USR is acting, the problem is, there are many young USRs out there that ruin it for the rest of them. Just like there are adult USRs that make us look bad.

I've been here for awhile, and I've never seen nor myself blamed children for any behavior I dislike. In fact, the lastest thread I saw that deals with children was urging children (and their parents) to stop using their age as an excuse for bad behavior. The most common attitude I've seen in the users of PI of all ages is: we judge you based on how you behave, not on your age.

I'd also like to point out that when someone complains in general about any group of people, it speaks more to their own character than to those they are complaining about. Just because someone can express an opinion doesn't make it true, but it does reveal their own biases.

Try not to take things personally when you know you are better than that.

It's not very bad here though, I'll admit it. Being 13 now, I don't get this very much, but I still do see some people who want me to just get off the Internet or get away from the site I'm on because of my age. Funny thing though? Yes, I know there was a thread recently about children specifically, but truthfully it doesn't matter whether the player is 10 or 50; it's their maturity level.

I don't try to worry about other players in all honesty (I mean like the drama on threads between two users and things like that.) The only time I will ever have a problem with another user, be they child or adult, is if they begin to make trouble for me. I try my hardest not to judge users because I try not to judge people in real life. I don't blame just one group for everything because I know that no matter the age anyone can act childlike and whine and all that jazz.

Now I see where you're coming from. There are users who do just that and blame everything on children. At the same time how is this any different then that. I know what you are trying to say but someone else could take this as you, a younger player, going on and assuming that the adults only blame the younger generations for the problems.

Personally I see it as this, make sure present yourself the way you want to be seen. Having trouble then step away and think about it. Now I'm not perfect and I know I'm no saint but I try my hardest to come across as the person I would want others to see me as. If I fail I learn and that's just what this is, a learning process. The longer you do something the better you get at it and this includes online etiquette.

This is something that grates on me too. For me it sounds like someone is being condescending, simply because it's not commonly used here, unless you do know someone well.

I don't think anyone has ever said children do all wrong. There are some wonderful uses on here that I remember being shocked when I found out their age 4-5years ago, and I've been able to see them grow into wonderful teenagers.

I don't assume people who beg, use chat speak etc are children, however I do see them as being immature. Immature and children are two separate issues however. I know some of the people I've thought to be immature end up being mid 20's! I still think of them as immature however due to their online presentation.

Just thought I would also have a bit of input here. The user with the most unsportsman-like behavior I know on PI is over eighteen. This specific user rages when they don't win and demands to know how the winner was "better than their post that was best." They even question the randomizer. I believe I come off as very childish most of the times, childish is a common used word to stamp on people who have certen character "flaws". Be it annoying and/or inconsiderate behavior, a specific way of speaking/writing, or just very naive. People have put things under the word childish and immature, but doesnt have anything to do with age in all honesty. The things listed under these words are things any age can do after all. So when some one calls a child childish I don't see the link to that some one picking on the child for its age.

Its just a generalisation that "all kids" are in a way. People can conclude such things easy if they have come in contact with the bad apples of the bunch more frequently then the good ones. Its hard to think the opposite if experience has proven the opposite. I have recently had to deel with alot of teenagers make overly massive drame scenes for nothing. And I have complained about how it anger me that teen girls are so annoying that it starts to grit my nerves heavily. If id tell just that, its easy to assume I stamp all teens like it, while I do realise the opposite.

But most importantly, never forget your behind a screen. And dont forget alot of people wount tell you the full story or only bring up the core of the topic to get your point across and potentially gain the feedback your looking for on the topic. If you complain your cookies dont taste nice cause you by accident switched an ingredient (but dont mention the ingredient mishap), in most cases youd find it annoying if some one went all "oh noes, you dont like cookies!" while that wasent your point to begin with. However that person could have assumed it by the lack of a full picture. In other situations your perhaps just to irritated and full of emotion by it happening recently that you forget to be rational and mention your pinpointing at specifics and not general.

Oh .. and again your behind a screen. How much I may love some of the people on here. By the end of the day they are out of my life by the press of a button. And there are alot of people who misuse that fact. Or use it as a tool to get their frustation out unrestrained. Live and let live, let the people fuming over "children" cook in their own fire. Perhaps they will learn after they properly burned themselves.

Edit: Seeing Belle's reply. Using your age is a childish trait, but any age can do it indeed =3 With such a line you only target the people that do, not the entire population of children.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that all younger players behave badly and adults are all okay, so this is a kind of strange rant, to me.

I have had my worst encounters on this site with fellow adults (mostly because those few adults have felt that they are always right, no matter, and tend to fly off the handle over really small things o.o). That said, I've seen people who either are very young or have apparently never seen a computer before they joined PI do some of the weirdest/most annoying things as well.

I think the kinds of problems you tend to see between adults and children are different, with some blending on one edge... like a Venn Diagram!

The begging and blaming doesn't seem to be confined to any particular age group, from my experience.

ETA: Though, from the posts that I've seen recently, it's been more complaints about "Hey I'm only *insert age here*" as if that's an excuse for bad behavior. I think, in those cases, it's fairly safe to assume the person you're interacting with is a child, since that person just said so.

I really appreciate how you put this Were, because it is true that it isn't just the kids who cause strife on PI. I'm not as much of a kid anymore, compared to when I started on PI (was 10, now am 16!), but when I was a new PIer, I wasn't doing stupid stuff and then making excuses for my behavior.

I think Snicky, that because the behavior that creates this unhappiness is usually immature, the people who commit this behavior are labelled as kids. To act immature online will usually mean other people will assume they are young. I think it works the other way too however :happy Act mature, and people will think you are older... probably. I know I do it all the time. Unless somebody says otherwise, I usually assume the people who use pretty decent english are older than I. Like with you Snicky, I thought you were atleast my age!
