I blew through the new Lupin III series (of the three episodes available to watch), as well as the same thing with Polar Bear's Cafe.
I am desperate for anime to watch.
I like (in no particular order):
-No. 6
-Baccano
-Mermaid Forest
-Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee/ Tegami Bachi: Reverse (sequel)
-Hetalia
-Lupin III (in general)

I want some ideas on things to watch, as an added note I will post things I didn't like based on the first episode (that I remember and are popular):
-Black Butler/ Kuroshitsuji
-Ouran HS Host Club (though I did watch more than the first episode)
EDT:
-Death Note (Didn't hook me)

Do not give me super girly anime, something over 75 episodes, school, or on-going with more than 75 episodes.

I like original concepts.

I think you should try Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood if you haven't already watched it ^_^

It is by far my all-time favorite anime, with a good amount of comedy but still having a very serious plot

Madoka Magica - this one is a maybe? It's a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, so artwise it appears girly, but it's actually much more dark.

I highly recommend Angel Beats, sounds girly but is a totally original concept and really doesn't fit into any category. Others that are good: Durarara if you haven's seen it, its in the same universe as Baccano and Isaac and Miram actually make a cameo appearance, if you like gory battles, Corpse Princess is also really good and kind of an interesting concept, and Princess Tutu, is another that it kinda girly but is an extremely interesting concept with great plot twists. Hope that helps.

Rurouni Kenshin (Skip Season 3. Trust me, you'll be much happier if you don't watch the horror that destroyed one of my favourite anime ever D;)

Monster- I haven't watched it but I just finished the manga. The anime is very faithful to the manga or so I hear :3 74 episodes, right in the range

Edit: I forget >.< I haven't seen it but I hear Higurashi is freaking scary And yeah, you can't go wrong with Full Metal Alchemist

Full Metal Panic is pretty funny :3

And this might be a bit of a stretch but if you love Mecha; Zoids. I love big mechanical animals

Ghost Stories might get your attention, but I haven't found any english sub since it's pretty much non-existent.
English dubbed is about 98% ad-libed since it didn't do well in Japan, they gave it to the U.S, told them to have fun and....they did! There's like 20 episodes, has some sort of plot line, but not much due to the ad-libbing the actors did. Funny stuff, though.

eta - But it is more or less around a school since they're school kids, so we can just cross that off the list.

Code Geass. It's much different than it first appears to be, if you've seen any clips or pictures.

I'd also recommend Madoka Magica.
