Well I saw all these threads around and people askinga bout making tattoos in gimp and MSpaint so I thought I would try my best to help those who need help with it
Photoshop and Gimp Information:
Alright, I see a lot of people on this thread asking about GIMP and since no one has answered yet I will try my best to answer. I have used both of these programs. Photoshop and GIMP are very similar, to the point you can open Photoshop files with Gimp.
So, making a tatooo, let's say you have your picture all ready, right? Make sure that it is a layer and NOT the background. If it is the background just copy and paste it as a new layer which should do it automatically when you psate anyway. And if there is a white layer under it called background just delete that layer.. Once you've done this just select the white around it with the magic wand tool and delete as you go along.
Soon you should be able to see the transparency in the background, if not try to do these steps again. Then save it as a gif and keep the transparency on.
I will add images in a bit for this. However it is very similar to photoshop and a tutorial for the how to's of it can be found here.
Making Tattoos in MS Paint (with pictures!)
This will take a longer time then some programs but it can be very satisfying if you know how to use it.
Let me also begin with saying that you should ALWAYS use your own work for tattoos, jsut because you think something is pretty is no reason to take it and use it as a tattoo. The same for this goes with photos if you are using those, there are many great free stock photo sites that usually do not even need any form of credit such as stockxchange.com.
So let's say you have a picture right? I will draw one myself for effect. NOTE: you do NOT need to make the background transparent to make a nice looking tattoo IF you know what you are doing. Though you can do this on all sorts of Sgene ponies this tattoo tutorial Hopefully this tutorial for paint will help those of you who have nothing else and feel most comfortable in it.
Alright, so I drew the cutest picture let's say that I think would make a great tattoo:
(Note: smaller images tend to work better as they loose less quality but I chose a larger image to show better what I was doing)
So what I need to do is decide what pony I want to put it on! I think I will put it on my pony Amadeo:
So because I'm not using a transparent background, I need to find out what his body colour is! But beside him are his stats!:
- Ahah! Success! So, what I need to do is to get that colour into paint? What I need to do is take a screenshot, or print screen. It's a little button on the top of my keyboard that will say Print screen (or whatever it is depending on your language, mine says Impr. écran Syst/Insér. as I have a french keyboard). For those who can't find it, this is where it is! (My mum graciously lent me her keyboard to take a picture of as my keyboard is not a normal one). Circled in red is the print screen button, in blue is the F lock (Also known as scroll lock as you will see on this keyboard), you must make sure the flock key is turned OFF (it displays a light when it's on a lot like the capslock key does).
So once you have pressed it, open up a new paint program (Do not use the one with your picture in it yet!) and paste it (You can go to edit > paste at the top or press CTRL + V). You should have something like this:

Now what you need to do is select the body colour with the rectangle marquee tool (it looks like a rectangle with dashed lines) and drag it over the body colourand select as little as you can like this
Go up to edit > copy on your computer (or ctrl + c) and go back into the paint window with your drawing in it and paste it like you did with the screenshot (edit > paste). you should have something that looks like this:

Now what you want to do is use the eyedropper tool (It looks like a little dropper like this
) and select the colour of your pony. It should appear as your top colour:
(Note: If you can't see this toolbar go up to view > and make sure there is a checkmark beside all of the options.)
Now it should change to the fill tool (Which looks like a paint bucket tipping over like this
) Now click around on the picture to anywhere you want to be transparent or not show up on your pony like this:
Now the image is ready to make a tattoo of your pony! Depending on where you want it to go you may want to make it longer or shorter, there is a great site showing where the tattoos can go on each pony found here. Make sure to have as little of the background visable. Having too much white or colour around your tattoo will make it shrink and distort!

So once you have done that, go file > save as and save it as a GIF file.

However this does pixel depending on the colours you're using for the background, if you don't like how this looks you can try downloading a free animation program or a trial for one such as jasc animation shop of GIMP's new animation program.
And here is Amadeo modeling his new tattoo! (There is a stickied thread in this forum about putting tattoos in your ponies!) You can play with the width and height of the background and the background colour to get your tattoo to line up where you want it

I hope this tutorial helped you with your tattooing needs
